London 'one of worst EU capitals'

Mercer Consulting's annual league tables for quality of life places London 11th out of the 15 EU capitals with London sinking to 12th in the rankings for health and sanitation.

Commenting following the publication of the report London LibDem Euro-MP Baroness Sarah Ludford said:

"It is not news to Londoners that their city has more than its fair share of problems. With a gap of up to £20 billion between what London contributes to the country and what it receives in public spending London has been let down by Labour and Tory governments both failing to invest in making London greater.

I do not take a religious perspective but it is clear that it is not only Europeans who feel strongly that the situation at Guantanamo Bay offends against our sense of justice. One of the senior justices in the United Kingdom Lord Steyn branded the proposed military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay as a stain on US justice and the term 'kangaroo court' springs to mind. The British Court of Appeal has branded the detention of prisoners there as a legal black hole.

The European Parliament is due tomorrow (10 March) to approve streamlined rules to facilitate the rights of European citizens and their families to move and live freely within the European Union.

Sarah Ludford condemns terror attacks in Madrid

Commenting in the aftermath of the Madrid terrorist attack Baroness Sarah Ludford London MEP and European justice spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats condemned the acts and called for a unified approach to combat terrorism.

She said:

"This is a grievous atrocity and our first thoughts must be for the victims and their families. European Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament extend their deepest condolences to all those affected by this terrible act.

"It is crucial that we do not rush to judgment on this matter simply because of the scale of the casualties. Painstaking analysis is required before blame can validly be attributed to any group or movement.
