Sending a message for our future in Europe

Written by Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP and published in The Times on Thu 10th Jun 2004

Sir, The European elections may well produce "a wild vote in weird circumstances" (leading article, June 8). But coming as they do in the lead-up to a referendum on the constitution and to a general election, the internal conflict in the Conservative Party will, I believe, be destructive.

Conservative supporters who also support Britain playing a full role in the EU have to decide if, at least for these European elections, it is time to leave the sinking ship of the Tory party. As support slips from the Conservatives to the UKIP the Eurosceptic Tories are sending their message to the leadership. Pro-Europeans should consider doing the same.

It feels strange to say it, and it is a sign of how the Labour Government has put tabloid opinion before principle, but in the European elections the real choice is between UKIP and Lib Dem.

Yours sincerely, Sarah Ludford
