Human rights court victory welcomed12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 30th Jul 2002 The High Court judgement that nine men detained indefinitely without trial under anti-terrorism legislation is unlawful and discriminatory under the Human Rights Act, has been welcomed by London Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Baroness Sarah Ludford. "This was a shameful example of the government purporting to defend freedom and democracy - by undermining fundamental rights!" "In fact, the UK government is the only one in Europe that resorted to breaching the European Human Rights Convention by locking up people it claimed to be terrorist suspects, but without proving it in a trial." "The bizarre aspect of this case is that if the Government was right in its claims that they were potential terrorists, why was it ready to release them to go abroad and be free to carry out murderous acts from there?" Sarah Ludford, who is European Liberal Democrat spokeswoman on justice and home affairs in the European Parliament, attended the first day of the hearing at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission, a division of the High Court. She also spoke against the Anti-Terrorism Bill in the House of Lords late last year.
