MEP calls on London's sixth formers to stand for European Youth Parliament

12.00.00am GMT Tue 6th Nov 2001

London's Liberal Democrat MEP, Baroness Sarah Ludford, is calling on sixth formers from across London to stand for the European Youth Parliament (EYP) taking place in several European countries next year.

This allows young people from up to 30 countries to participate in international conferences and discuss a range of European issues from the environment through to defence. Their decisions are circulated amongst MEPs as well as national governments.

Sixth formers wanting to take part need their schools to apply and teams of pupils then compete in regional and national heats before the top students from the UK are selected to serve on the EYP, which has been held in Belgium, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland in recent years.

Baroness Ludford said: "The chance to represent the UK at the European Youth Parliament is a superb opportunity for any young person interested in the world around them. Anyone who wants to develop and express their opinions on a whole range of issues affecting us here in Europe should make sure that they take part.

"So long as the young people of Europe come together to work out common solutions to their shared problems then there will be a sound future for Europe."

Those interested should visit www.eyp.org for more details.
