A worldwide campaign to abolish the death penalty4.09.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 4th May 2004
The first World Congress against the Death Penalty was hosted by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe in June 2004, gathering together abolitionists from around the world. The second such World Congress meets in Montreal, Canada, in October 2004 and Sarah Ludford joined other MEPs to call for support for its work. She said: "The death penalty is outlawed in Europe as a cruel and inhuman punishment. It is sad that so-called civilised countries like the United States retain it; by doing so, they give comfort to repressive regimes. I am glad as a Euro-MP to help lead a worldwide campaign to eliminate this barbaric practice."
