Female 'pester power' decisive in Commission decision

4.17.55pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 27th Oct 2004

Regarding the decision by Jose Manuel Barroso to withdraw his proposed set of Commissioners, Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP, London MEP and European justice spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats, commented:

"Female 'pester power' is also a victor of today's back down by Barroso."

"Women MEPs - a third of the European Parliament - were highly influential in shaping a majority to reject Buttiglione as Justice Commissioner due to his medieval anti-equality views."

"Women parliamentarians everywhere can take heart from our success today."
