Rejection of Turkey would be domestic setback

1.05.45pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 3rd Oct 2005

London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford is warning that the impact of a failure to agree the opening of Turkish EU accession talks could be felt domestically as well as in Turkey.

"Just when we are struggling here in Britain to overcome any suggestion of a "clash of civilisations" thesis about the July 7th bombings, it would be a great setback for European governments to reject EU membership for a Muslim country."
