Egyptian fax increases determination to stop "war on terror" jails

12.00.00am GMT Mon 9th Jan 2006

Following this weekend's allegations in the Swiss press that a leaked fax from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirms the presence of secret CIA jails in Romania and Bulgaria, Liberal Democrat European justice spokeswoman Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP said:

"This is a piece of real evidence to back up the gut instinct many of us have that the denials of complicity coming from EU member and candidate states cannot be relied upon."

"It will reinforce the determination of MEPs to determine the truth in this matter in close cooperation with Council of Europe investigator Dick Marty."

Notes

The Swiss newspaper Sonntagsblick yesterday (09.01.06) published a copy of a fax obtained from the Swiss intelligence services who had apparently intercepted a note sent by the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abu Gheit to the Egyptian embassy in London. It allegedly contains evidence that 23 Iraqi and Afghan prisoners had been interrogated in Romania and that camps also exist in Bulgaria, Kosovo, Macedonia and Ukraine.
