US justice comes up trumps

4.24.32pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 29th Jun 2006

Commenting on the landmark ruling by the US Supreme Court that the Bush administration does not have the authority to try Guantanamo prisoners by military tribunals under executive powers, Liberal Democrat European justice spokeswoman and vice-chair of the European parliament temporary committee on torture flight allegations Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP said:

"Those conservatives in Europe who oppose our inquiries into 'extraordinary rendition' on the grounds that it they are anti-American are shown up for the empty fools they are. This homegrown US victory for the rule of law shows that it is the Bush administration that is out of step with American values of fairness and justice."
