Sarah Ludford MEP

Press Calling Notice - Mass Lone Demo II

4.52.10pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 22nd Sep 2006

Venue: Parliament Square, London

Date: Friday 22nd September

Time: 18.00-19.00

London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford will this evening be joining campaigning comedian Mark Thomas at the second 'mass lone demo' in Parliament Square.

This series of individual demonstrations is to highlight the absurdity of the ban on protests within one kilometre of Parliament Square without prior police permission. Sarah Ludford has obtained from Charing Cross police the requisite authorisation to protest against Tony Blair's foreign policy (between 18.00 and 18.30) and to celebrate 'car free day' (between 18.30 and 19.00).

Baroness Ludford commented:

"That the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act should incorporate provisions stifling legitimate protest is quite absurd. It is a sad testimony to this Labour government's utter lack of respect for freedom of speech."
