Sarah at Guantanamo vigil12.00.00am GMT Thu 11th Jan 2007
To mark the five year anniversary of Guantanamo Bay, Sarah participated in a candlelit vigil with the family, friends and supporters of Guantanamo inmate Jamil El-Banna, Ming Campbell and London Lib Dem MP colleagues Ed Davey, Sarah Teather and Simon Hughes, and Director of Amnesty International UK, Kate Allen. Sarah commented: "Liberal Democrats have condemned Guantanamo Bay from the outset and we continue to lead calls in the UK and Europe for this illegal detention camp to be closed." "It is unacceptable that five years on, hundreds of men remain incarcerated without charge or trial and suffer cruel, degrading and inhumane treatment or even torture at the hands of their American captors." "The Labour government must stop dragging its heels and expedite the release of the nine British inmates."
