Sarah Ludford meets European privacy watchdog
11.13.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 8th May 2007
Sarah talks to Peter Hustinx, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and an EU official at the launch of the former's third annual report. The EDPS is an independent supervisory authority acting to ensure protection of personal data and privacy in the EU institutions and laws.
In his report Mr Hustinx welcomes progress made, but urges the development of a data protection culture as a part of good governance in the EU administration and better respect for privacy in EU policies and legislation.
Sarah said: "I congratulate the EDPS in his crucial role both as a watchdog of the EU's processing of personal data and as an advisor to European legislators including MEPs. His role is of growing importance as threats to our privacy increase at European as well as national level, with new databases and biometric information."
