During the Strasbourg January session, prior to taking part in the European Parliament debate on 'Democratisation in Turkey' Sarah met Kurdish MP Hasip Kaplan (centre) and Fayik Yagigay from the new Peace and Democracy party, the successor to the DTP which was banned by Turkey's constitutional court in December and learned from them about the worrying impact of the closure decsion which she condemned at the time as a backward step for the chances of political settlement and democratic politics in Turkey.

On Saturday 23 January Sarah attended a protest at Trafalgar Square entitled 'I'm a photographer, not a terrorist'. The gathering, organised among others by photographer Grant Smith, was called because the police are increasingly using Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 to stop, search and sometimes arrest people taking photographs as part of their normal tourist or professional business. There have been concerns in London about the City of London police and the Met police abusing these powers and indeed the Strasbourg European Court of Human Rights said that these powers are too extensive and being used in an arbitrary manner.

Sarah attended a fantastic event organised by the Bangladesh High Commission to congratulate British Bangladeshi students who had achieved high marks in the GSCE and A Level exams. She awarded outstanding achievement awards and also (photo 2) met the Liberal Democrat Mayor of Camden, Councillor Faruque Ansari (L) and the Bangladeshi High Commissioner Dr Sayeedur Rahman Khan.Sarah commented. "I think other High Commissions and Embassies with a significant diaspora should aslo consider staging such an event. It both encourages the students to do well in the host country their parents or grandparents chose and reminds them of their roots and the value that the home country places on their continued interest and support."

Last Wednesday, 11 November, Sarah met with a delegation of monks and nuns representing the Bat Nhat monastery in Vietnam. The monastery, which follows the Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, practises a non-traditional form of Buddhism. There is alarm that the Vietnamese government is tightening its grip and denying religious freedoms. Last month the monks and nuns were violently evicted from their monastery, and left for days without food or electricity.

Sarah Ludford met Fevzi Hussein and Ismail Veli from Embargoed!, a London-based campaigning organisation calling for an end to the political and economic isolation of the people of North Cyprus. Because of the unresolved division of the island and the non-recognition of the administration in the North, there is an international ban on direct travel and trade, sporting events, and academic exchange, except for Turkey which recognises the ‘Turkish Republic of North Cyprus’. Sarah Ludford, who has also recently met Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ozdil Nami, said: “The meeting highlighted how the people of North Cyprus suffer through trade embargoes and political isolation. I deeply regret that the Republic of Cyprus continues to veto a European Commission proposal for direct trade made 5 years ago in recognition of the Turkish Cypriot 2 to 1 vote for the UN Annan plan which was torpedoed by the negative Greek Cypriot vote. I fully support the renewed search for agreement on a bi-zonal bi-communal federation, but this must come quickly since the absence of a fair and comprehensive resolution, including to the property issue, is unsustainable. I and my colleagues in the European Parliament will explore what possibilities there now are for associating Turkish Cypriot representatives with the work of MEPs.”

Sarah attended an iftar Ramadhan fundraising dinner on August 30th hosted by the group Cageprisoner which is concerned with detainees held at Guantanamo and elsewhere. Sarah has long campaigned on the right to a fair trial or release for illegally held detainees and for accountabilty for the role of European governments, firstly as the Euopean Parliament's rapporteur on Gauntanamo and then as vice-chair of the European Parliament’s 2007 inquiry into extraordinary rendition and torture. Along with Liberal Democrtats at Westminster she insists on an independent inquiry on the role played by the UK government and intelligence services, so we finally get the full truth. She is pictured with Moazzam Begg, released in 2005 after 3 years, and Binyam Mohamed who was only released earlier this year. Binyam made his first public speech since his release and called for the release of the remaining prisoners being held without trial.

Sarah was delighted at the display on Morris dancing at the Angel Canal Festival in Islington on September 2nd: "It's not just rural areas that like to see old English traditions, we metropolitan types enjoy them too! And as a Euro-MP I am constantly battling the idea that the EU is destroying our national or regional identity. This is rubbish, any sense of being European supplements and does not replace a sense of being a Londoner, English or British (or French, Polish or whatever). My vision of Europe is one in which every bit of our diverse heritage and culture is celebrated."

Sarah showed her support for serious action on climate change at the Islington Friends of the Earth stall at the Angel Canal Festival on September 2nd. She said: "My fellow FoE members are telling me how much they value the real lead of the Liberal Democrats compared to Labour hypocrisy and laughably inadequate Tory gesture politics. They are particularly enthusiastic about the party's new 'Zero Carbon Britain - Taking a Global Lead' proposals which will be the centrepiece of our autumn conference. I have taken immediate action in the European Parliament to progress such a goal by leading the team of Liberal Democrat MEPs to vote against a reference in a Transport Committee resolution to allowing 60 tonne lorries on European roads."

Being keen on both history and diverse cultures Sarah Ludford [for press: Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London] attended, on the occasion of the eighth European Day of Jewish Culture and Heritage, the AGM of the Jewish East End Celebration Society at the East London Central synagogue in Nelson Street, off Commercial Road. Apart from the enjoyable talks by chairman Clive Bettison, Prof Bill Fishman and playwright Bernard Kops, the focus was on the unveiling at Nelson Street of a plaque recording the greetings of Queen Victoria on the occasion of the construction of the now-closed New Street Synagogue. Sarah is pictured with Henry Grunwald QC, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews who was brought up in the Nelson Street synagogue and performed the ceremony, and (front) with Jonathan Joseph of the European Council of Jewish Communities, with whom she agreed to keep in touch with a view to him coming to the European Parliament to present his work.

Sarah Ludford had the pleasure of attending a dinner hosted by the US ambassador to the EU in honour of the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court John Roberts and two of his colleagues, Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They had taken part earlier in a seminar with European Court of Justice judges and lawyers from the EU institutions. Sarah, pictured here with associate justice Breyer said “it is very important that lawyers and judges from the US and the EU exchange views and experience. We are the two main blocs of liberal democracies in the world, therefore the way we uphold human rights and civil liberties is vital not only to our own citizens and those in our custody but also to the international legal order. I am delighted to have had the great privilege of meeting the justices of the Supreme Court."

Sarah said: "The use of this device raises important civil liberties questions about treatment of young people, and I think some reflection about their compatibility with standards on childrens' rights and fundamental rights would be helpful."

Sarah Ludford with Murat Kurnaz (right) and his lawyer Bernard Docke, before a meeting of the European Parliament temporary committee enquiring into whether there was European collusion with CIA extraordinary rendition. Mr Kurnaz, a German resident and apparent victim of illegal rendition who was released from Guantanamo Bay in August, gave his account of being allegedly handed over by bounty-hunters in Pakistan, where he had gone to deepen his religious studies, to the Americans in Afghanistan with the connivance of German soldiers. He was shipped to Guantanamo Bay where he was held for almost 5 years and claims to have been interrogated by German officials. The German Bundestag as well as MEPs is investigating what the involvement of the German government was in this apparently clear case of illegal rendition and imprisonment

Sarah Ludford, a member of a car club which helps cuts down motoring, tries out an energy-saving Toyota Prius at this year's British International Motor Show in London Docklands. This hybrid car uses an electric motor, which recharges as the car brakes, for speeds below 30mph while the small petrol engine only kicks in above that. So for city motoring is fume-free and silent! At their party conference in September 2006, Liberal Democrats pledged to graduate vehicle excise duty more steeply based on carbon emissions and to index fuel duty to inflation.

Sarah had a brief respite from hard work on a visit with the European Parliament delegation to the US, with a trip to see the home of George Washington at Mount Vernon. She is pictured with MEP colleagues in front of his tomb. The ‘what if’ story goes that Washington joined the revolutionary forces because he was peeved that he was not offered a promotion in the British army; if he had been, America would still be in a British empire…

With the UK Presidency of the EU beginning on July 1st, Sarah Ludford took part in a, MEPs’ briefing with the Prime Minister and other senior British ministers. Sarah says: ‘Tony Blair has the chance now at last to show he means what he talked 8 years ago about putting our country at the heart of Europe. He is right to be prepared to discuss the ‘UK budget rebate’ only if reform of the Common Agricultural Policy is also on the table. But he must also show more generally that he intends to promote an effective and democratic EU, and he can start by opening up the closed doors of the Council of Ministers to public scrutiny.’

Scrap Strasbourg! Sarah Ludford demonstrates with her colleague Fiona Hall MEP against the expensive and wasteful requirement imposed on MEPs to meet in Strasbourg as well as Brussels. MEPs are obliged under the EU treaties signed by Member States to meet 12 times a year (one week a month) in the French city, but the bulk of the work takes place 3 weeeks a month more sensibly in Brussels, which is the HQ of the other EU institutions and thus the obvious place for a permanent seat for the European Parliament. Says Sarah "The situation is not only absurd, but scandalous. Governments' contempt for MEPs - and that means for the voters who we represent - entails £140 million a year in extra costs. It's high time Blair, Schroeder and co stood up to Chirac and made clear that there are better recipients for European taxpayers' contributions than this crazy travelling circus."
