Being keen on both history and diverse cultures Sarah Ludford [for press: Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London] attended, on the occasion of the eighth European Day of Jewish Culture and Heritage, the AGM of the Jewish East End Celebration Society at the East London Central synagogue in Nelson Street, off Commercial Road. Apart from the enjoyable talks by chairman Clive Bettison, Prof Bill Fishman and playwright Bernard Kops, the focus was on the unveiling at Nelson Street of a plaque recording the greetings of Queen Victoria on the occasion of the construction of the now-closed New Street Synagogue. Sarah is pictured with Henry Grunwald QC, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews who was brought up in the Nelson Street synagogue and performed the ceremony, and (front) with Jonathan Joseph of the European Council of Jewish Communities, with whom she agreed to keep in touch with a view to him coming to the European Parliament to present his work.
